10 Phrases That Build Creative Confidence in Kids

And why they matter more than “good job”
There’s a moment we see all the time in the studio.
A child pauses halfway through painting and quietly asks,“Is this right?”
And honestly? That tiny question says so much.

So many kids grow up believing creativity has rules. That art needs to look a certain way. That being “good” matters more than enjoying the process. Somewhere along the line, they start worrying about perfection instead of exploration.
At Faire & Co, we’re a little obsessed with changing that.
Because creative confidence is not about making perfect art. It’s about helping kids trust their ideas, take risks, make glorious painty messes and feel proud of what they create.
That’s why the words we use around creativity matter so much.
Here are 10 phrases we use constantly in our Perth art studio to help children create with confidence, curiosity and zero pressure.
1. “There’s no wrong way to create.”
One of the biggest creativity blockers for kids is fear of getting it wrong.
When children know there isn’t a “correct” outcome, they relax. They experiment more. They problem solve. They surprise themselves.
Process art works beautifully for this because the focus shifts away from perfection and onto exploration.
And honestly? The most magical artworks usually happen when kids stop trying to make things “perfect”.
2. “Can you tell me about your idea?”
Instead of correcting, directing or stepping in too quickly, we get curious.
This simple question helps children feel seen and heard. It encourages imagination, storytelling and confidence in their own thinking.
You’d be amazed how often a “random blob of paint” actually has a whole elaborate backstory involving dragons, space portals and a pet flamingo named Kevin.
3. “You don’t have to be good at something to enjoy it.”
This one matters for adults too.
Not every creative hobby needs to become a performance, a side hustle or a masterpiece worthy of framing.
Sometimes creativity is just about joy.
Kids naturally understand this until they start comparing themselves to others. Giving them permission to create simply because it feels good is incredibly powerful.
4. “Mistakes usually become the best part.”
We LOVE an accidental paint splatter around here.
Mistakes teach resilience, flexibility and creative problem solving without kids even realising it.
A smudge becomes a cloud.A spill becomes a galaxy.A wonky line becomes “abstract”.
Creative confidence grows when children learn they can recover, adapt and keep going.
5. “I wonder what would happen if…”
Questions create curiosity. Instructions often create pressure.
Open-ended prompts encourage experimentation and independent thinking instead of focusing on getting the “right answer”.
This is a huge part of how we teach process art classes at Faire & Co. Kids are invited to explore materials, ideas and techniques in their own way.
No pressure. No copying. No cookie-cutter crafts.
6. “That looks like it took a lot of effort.”
Instead of praising natural talent, we focus on process.
Effort. Persistence. Trying again. Experimenting.
Because confidence built purely on praise can disappear the second something feels hard.
But confidence built on resilience? That sticks.
7. “You solved that yourself.”
Tiny moments of independence matter.
When children trust their own ideas and problem-solving abilities, they become more confident creators.
Sometimes our job as adults is simply to step back long enough to let them figure it out.
Even if it means glitter ends up somewhere deeply inconvenient.
8. “Your art does not have to look like anyone else’s.”
Comparison can shut creativity down incredibly quickly.
Kids are constantly exposed to polished images online and can start believing their work has to look “better” to matter.
We remind children all the time that originality matters more than perfection.
Art is about expression, not sameness.
9. “You’re still learning.”
Adding the word “yet” changes everything.
“I can’t draw” becomes“I can’t draw yet.”
Creative confidence grows when children understand creativity is something they practise, not something they’re simply born with.
10. “What part do YOU like most?”
This might be our favourite one.
It helps children build internal confidence instead of relying completely on external praise.
They learn to value their own ideas, choices and creative decisions.
And honestly? That’s a skill that goes way beyond art class.
Why Creative Confidence Matters
Creative confidence doesn’t just help children make art.
It helps them problem solve. Communicate ideas. Take healthy risks. Trust themselves. Build resilience. Think creatively in everyday life.
And the beautiful thing is, confidence grows when children feel safe enough to experiment without pressure.
That’s exactly the kind of environment we work hard to create at Faire & Co.
Our Perth process art studio is designed for messy play, imagination, self-expression and joyful creativity for all ages and abilities. Whether it’s our Arty Farty classes, Sketchers Club, school holiday workshops or family events, the focus is always on the experience, not the outcome.
No perfect paintings required.
