DIY Cardboard Butterfly Wings for Kids

You can make DIY cardboard butterfly wings in about an hour with cardboard, paint, coloured paper and two pieces of elastic. Cut the wing shape, paint a border, glue on colourful shapes and thread elastic straps through the middle. They’re a fun craft for kids aged 2 and up (with a grown-up’s help) and a brilliant last-minute costume.

What do you need to make cardboard butterfly wings?

  • A large piece of cardboard (flat boxes work well)

  • Elastic

  • Coloured paper

  • Scissors

  • Acrylic paint and a paintbrush

  • A cardboard cutter or strong scissors (for grown-ups)

  • Glue stick

  • Pencil

  • Hairdryer (optional, to speed up drying)

Age: 2+ with help from a grown-up. The cutting is a grown-up job.

How do you make cardboard butterfly wings?

Step 1: Draw and cut. Sketch a butterfly wing shape on your cardboard and cut it out. Punch four holes in the centre in a rectangle pattern for the straps.

Step 2: Cut your shapes. Cut circles, triangles and other shapes from coloured paper.

Step 3: Paint a border. Paint a thick line around the outside edge of the wings. Smooth out any lumps so it dries faster. Dry it with a hairdryer, or leave it to dry, then do the other side.

Step 4: Decorate. Glue the coloured shapes onto both sides. This is the best bit for little hands, so let them go for it.

Step 5: Add the straps. Cut two pieces of elastic about 30cm long. Thread one through the top left hole and back out the bottom left hole, then tie a knot to make a loop. Repeat on the right side.

Step 6: Fly! Pop them on and let the imaginative play begin.

Tips for the best butterfly wings

  • Go big: larger wings look amazing in photos.

  • Think symmetry: matching shapes on each side is a great early maths moment.

  • Make it a costume: add a headband with pipe cleaner antennae.
